The Most Bang for Your Buck January 4, 2009 This is our 3rd wooden train set and I would have to say that it is by far the best for the money. We started off with a very cheap set for our oldest daughter when she was around two. We then went for a Thomas set and added several of the trains to it. I will say that set did have the best quality if you are just going by appearance. We got rid of that set after all of the recalls for lead paint. We have 2 younger children as well and we did not want to keep up with all the recalls, for the price of those trains and accessories lead paint should NOT be an issue IMO. So, this year our middle child who is 3 1/2 really wanted a train set from Santa, after a lot of looking around we decided on this one. I have to say that we are very pleased, we own a ton of Melissa and Doug toys so we felt confident that the product would be on par in quality with other M & D toys. I had read other reviews so I knew that the track layouts provided do not fit on standard train tables so we made a few modifications when setting it up Christmas Eve and it fit very well on our standard size table (I think only 2-3 pieces had to be omitted for it to fit). I had also read about the SureTrack Clips (2 packs do the job) and I will say that they are a MUST have with this set (or probably any other). This set comes with a lot of elevation pieces and the SureTrack really saves a small child a lot of frustration. There are 2 elevated bridges in this set and I used wood glue to glue risers onto the ends to make them sturdier as the SureTrack would not clip to those. Other than that we made no modifications. I know other reviewers have glued or nailed down the entire set like they do in the stores but we wanted to avoid that as our son is pretty good with configuring his own tracks even at 3 1/2 and we wanted him to have that option as well as being able to put the train away and use the table for other things. So again SureTrack helps with that dilemma. This set does come with mostly all usable pieces and few road signs, trees, etc that other sets are loaded with and that is also a plus as others have stated. Last but not least after 3 days of being set up the turn table and track that connects to the roundhouse had warped a bit and curved upwards making it impossible for trains to go over the track smoothly. I sent M & D an email on a Saturday and received a phone call that Monday and they shipped the replacements right out. It is very hard to find customer service like that these days. All in all this is a great set that your child will enjoy without spending a small fortune.
Great Toy for my 2 year old Boy January 4, 2009 We bought this for our two year old for Christmas and it's great. I shopped around a lot for train sets before I decided on this one. I have no regrets. As many people have said one of the great things is the fact that it doesn't come with all the "junk" the kids don't care about. You get a few trees and people but mostly just track. The set up was easy and the four patterns that were included were also nice. You DEFINITELY need to get two packages of sure track. I bought some based on other users reviews and was SO glad I did. I'm not sure it would stand up long to a 2 year old with out. Don't waste your money on a Thomas brand train set. Get this one for a fraction of the money and the thomas trains will fit. My 2 year old, 5 year old and I love it!
A Wonderful First Train-Set for Toddlers! January 3, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My husband and I gave this train-set to our 22-month-old for Christmas after researching several train sets and we made the right choice: my son can't stop playing with it...and, actually, neither can my husband! The first thing my son does when he comes downstairs in the morning is head straight for the train set. The tracks are easy to put together (my son doesn't yet have full dexterity to do it by himself -- he's young -- so we help him) and my son has no problem getting the train cars onto the tracks once we've assembled the tracks for him. The set is made from very nice wood that does not have any splinters, and the train colors are vibrant. The wheels on the trains appear to be connected quite well, so I am not worried about them popping off and becoming a choking hazard: in other words, this set is completely appropriate for a 2+-year-old. Although we haven't purchased any additional trains, it says it is compatible with both the Thomas and Brio (popular in Europe) sets. On the advice of several other parents, we also purchased the Melissa and Doug Activity Table so that my son doesn't have to sit on the floor all the time to move the train around the track. However, we haven't assembled it yet, and so far my son doesn't seem to mind playing with it on the floor. Overall, this is a solid investment for a toddler who likes trains.
Wonderful product, but not compatible with our learning curve diecast metal thomas trains! :( January 2, 2009 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Melissa and Doug products. This train set is wonderful and such an amazing value. I am just sad that our Thomas the Train, diecast cars do NOT fit on the track. This track hooks up to the wooden set that we bought at Ikea. Based on others reviews, I thought that it would work with the Thomas the Train cars. We can still put them on the track, but the body of the cars are too narrow and so it's just not right. I did try one of our son's bigger plastic Thomas' and that fit just fine, but that's not the ones we were collecting :( We have the Learning Curve trains... Hopefully this review will help someone else from buying the track, if they only want it for a Thomas collection!
Great add on to Thomas Set; Lots of track January 1, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Its not Thomas or Brio. The difference between a sturdy little Honda and a BMW.
Cons: Thomas track feels smoother in hand. The melissa and doug crane is dinky compared to my used ebay Brio one which is pleasant to pull the string for the cargo. The roundhouse is particle board like. The alternative track layouts are a bit ridiculous (stacking two risers on top of each other! how would that stay up??) and won't fit the train table. You can see the amount of thought that goes into a Thomas set - they are very well planned to fit on the train table and also to be "steady" layouts.
Pros: AMAZING amount of "unusual track" in addition to the basics - I purchased to get the 3" MMF/FFM switches, the T switch, the mini ramps, the end stop ramps, 4 ascending track, tons of risers, tons of 6" straight track and short ~3" curved track for those tight layouts and of course, you get the roundhouse, all for the price of one roundhouse and maybe one expansion pack from Thomas. Its a great combo of cool accessories and cool track.
Conclusion: I am happy for what it is - a cheaper way to get the "unusual track" to allow me to make cool Thomas layouts which you just can't get in such profusion from any Thomas or Brio set. So I love this set plus my ebay Thomas set (cool accessories) and my ebay Brio bridge/tunnel accessories (really well made!), my Brio trains(smooth ride) plus 2 boxes of sure track to ensure no risers disappoint me (ahem, my son). If you're not as train crazy as me, however, its a great way to start your train play.
