Expert Tips and Fascinating History
If you've never played Scrabble before, the Gameplay Guide explains the rules in a clear, easy-to-read way. It also has lots of tips to sharpen your game (a list of "q-without-u" words, for example). The sturdy plastic board needs no assembly and the storage trays cleverly built into the bottom of the board are easy to find, especially with help from the Gameplay Guide. The game also comes with a Gameplay Guide that offers many helpful hints, as well as interesting historical tidbits (For example, did you know the game used to be called "Criss Cross Words?")

A Sleek New Look for Scrabble
The black-and-silver tiles, the smoky red racks, and the velvety tile pouch give this Scrabble set a touch of class. The curvature of the racks help you to see your letters more easily than you could on the old, straight racks. During gameplay, the raised grid will help keep your tiles firmly in place, even when the board spins towards another player. The pouch helps keep all the letters and racks together during play. Put them in the storage trays when you're done, fold the board back up -- and voila -- you have a carrying case that makes this deluxe Scrabble game easy to take with you.

Fun and Functional
We really liked the look of this colorful board, with its cheerful blue, green, red, and orange "premium" squares. We also appreciated the way the set folds up into a carrying case, complete with the storage trays and handle. It's not advertised as a travel set, but you can use it that way. You just have to be careful to hold the set closed when transporting it, since it doesn't snap shut. Also, the storage trays can get a little full when you try to put all the letters and racks in one tray, so make sure you tuck everything neatly into the tray so it will close.

Millions of people around the world love the game of Scrabble, and we're sure they'll be just as happy as we are to see this new, improved edition with features that make it both more fun and more functional!

What's in the Box

4 out of 5 stars Nice, with some notable drawbacks   January 8, 2009
Pro: I like the semi-portability and ruggedness of the set-- the magnetic clasp is nifty, and being self-contained is nice and elegant (too bad there isn't enough room for a full Scrabble dictionary, but that seems kind of impractical save for an electronic solution). If you want to bring it with you to a coffee shop or something, it beats the basic boxed set and the bigger deluxe sets. The raised grid is nice for protecting against the odd bump to the board or careless brush when placing tiles. The cloth bag is much nicer than the standard plastic one. Very minor plus: wild tiles aren't featureless blank tiles, but have a diamond etched into them, which makes it slightly harder to immediately identify them by touch when fishing for new tiles.

Con: Others have mentioned the odd bonus square coloring, which to me is an issue, albeit a minor one. I don't think the lack of scorepads is a big deal-- I can scare up some paper and pencil. A timer, while nice to have, again isn't a big deal to me. However, one of the tradeoffs for having the raised grid is that cleanup is substantially more tedious than before-- you can't just fold the board and slide all the tiles back into the bag, picking up the few that may have spilled. You need to manually peel all the tiles from the grid, unless you want to dump them on the table/floor first, which really isn't any better, and could lead to lost tiles. The other issue I noticed is that the tiles don't slide as smoothly on the plastic curved racks as on the old wooden ones. It seems like a minor issue, but shuffling the tiles isn't effortless like on the old racks, and I like to shuffle my tiles.

Other thoughts: It would be nice if the tiles couldn't be distinguished by touch, to remove the temptation of fishing for wild tiles or specific letters. Simply painting on the letters seems to be asking for them to wear off, but maybe a thin plastic/epoxy coating or something?

Bottom Line: All in all, I can't say this is a significant improvement over the base set, unless you plan to take it places now and then or are inordinately vexed by shifted tiles during games, as there are non-trivial tradeoffs that largely offset the gains. But hey, it's still Scrabble.

5 out of 5 stars Best Christmas gift reaction ever!   January 8, 2009
My In-Laws love to play Scrabble and tease each other by calling us to tell us who beat who and such. They had a pretty old Scrabble set, so when I saw this one on sale for less than $15, we thought we'd give it a try as a Christmas gift. We were not disappointed, lol! When my mother-in-law tore off the paper she said "OH-LOOK AT THAT HONEY - ITS THE TURNTABLE ONE!" We couldn't have asked for a better reaction and they've already played it several times. They tell us all the time how much they love it. Great product!

5 out of 5 stars Love it!   January 8, 2009
I love this diamond anniversary edition Scrabble. I had owned another basic Scrabble set but had issues of tiles slipping from the board. This one has grooves so the tiles do not slip and move. The box is sturdy and it has two drawer for storing the tiles and trays. We love playing Scrabble. Not only it is fun but very educational too. My 6 year old is learning a lot of words playing Scrabble with us. A must have game for a family!

4 out of 5 stars gift   January 6, 2009
Have not played with this version, it was a gift for a 7 year old. I am however, a big fan of original scrabble. I imagine the diamond version is just as much fun.

5 out of 5 stars Best Board for the Price!   January 6, 2009
Great deal for a fantastic product. Easy to play, carry, store... this is a PERFECT edition of Scrabble!
